Before changing your business arrangements, confirm what your existing agreements allow and what the proposed relationship requires. There is no single appointment or first-case timeline.
Confirm licensing and training
List the states and products you intend to work with. Ask the relevant state insurance department about the licenses, business-entity requirements, training, and other conditions that apply. State insurance departments oversee producer licensing and conduct; the NAIC producer-licensing overview explains that framework.
Review agreements before making a move
Have qualified advisers review your existing and proposed agreements. Ask about notice, client contact, confidentiality, records, renewals, vesting, chargebacks, and any release or exclusivity provisions. Do not assume that your book, data, or compensation will transfer.
Confirm carrier access and terms
Ask which relationships are direct and which involve an intermediary. Confirm your appointment, product, state, training, and authorized submission process for each proposed case. Request the applicable producer agreement and commission schedules, including payment and adjustment terms. Build your budget from those records; an earnings example is not a prediction.
Check the workflow before a client case
Ask which tools and support are available now. Confirm the contact for outstanding requirements and the approved channel for client information. Carrier decisions and records govern appointment, issue, and case status.
Ask our team about your intended business. Include your state, license lines, and product interests, without client personal information.
